Kinetics of self-induced aggregation of Brownian particles: non-Markovian and non-Gaussian features
In this paper we have studied a model for self-induced aggregation in
Brownian particle incorporating the non-Markovian and non-Gaussian character of
the associated random noise process. In this model the time evolution of each
individual is guided by an over-damped Langevin equation of motion with a
non-local drift resulting from the local unbalance distributions of the other
individuals. Our simulation result shows that colored nose can induce the
cluster formation even at large noise strength. Another observation is that
critical noise strength grows very rapidly with increase of noise correlation
time for Gaussian noise than non Gaussian one. However, at long time limit the
cluster number in aggregation process decreases with time following a power
law. The exponent in the power law increases remarkable for switching from
Markovian to non Markovian noise process
Projected single-spin flip dynamics in the Ising Model
We study transition matrices for projected dynamics in the
energy-magnetization space, magnetization space and energy space. Several
single spin flip dynamics are considered such as the Glauber and Metropolis
canonical ensemble dynamics and the Metropolis dynamics for three
multicanonical ensembles: the flat energy-magnetization histogram, the flat
energy histogram and the flat magnetization histogram. From the numerical
diagonalization of the matrices for the projected dynamics we obtain the
sub-dominant eigenvalue and the largest relaxation times for systems of varying
size. Although, the projected dynamics is an approximation to the full state
space dynamics comparison with some available results, obtained by other
authors, shows that projection in the magnetization space is a reasonably
accurate method to study the scaling of relaxation times with system size. The
transition matrices for arbitrary single-spin flip dynamics are obtained from a
single Monte-Carlo estimate of the infinite temperature transition-matrix, for
each system size, which makes the method an efficient tool to evaluate the
relative performance of any arbitrary local spin-flip dynamics. We also present
new results for appropriately defined average tunnelling times of magnetization
and compute their finite-size scaling exponents that we compare with results of
energy tunnelling exponents available for the flat energy histogram
multicanonical ensemble.Comment: 23 pages and 6 figure
Universal scaling in sports ranking
Ranking is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the human society. By clicking the web
pages of Forbes, you may find all kinds of rankings, such as world's most
powerful people, world's richest people, top-paid tennis stars, and so on and
so forth. Herewith, we study a specific kind, sports ranking systems in which
players' scores and prize money are calculated based on their performances in
attending various tournaments. A typical example is tennis. It is found that
the distributions of both scores and prize money follow universal power laws,
with exponents nearly identical for most sports fields. In order to understand
the origin of this universal scaling we focus on the tennis ranking systems. By
checking the data we find that, for any pair of players, the probability that
the higher-ranked player will top the lower-ranked opponent is proportional to
the rank difference between the pair. Such a dependence can be well fitted to a
sigmoidal function. By using this feature, we propose a simple toy model which
can simulate the competition of players in different tournaments. The
simulations yield results consistent with the empirical findings. Extensive
studies indicate the model is robust with respect to the modifications of the
minor parts.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Fluctuations and correlations in hexagonal optical patterns
We analyze the influence of noise in transverse hexagonal patterns in
nonlinear Kerr cavities. The near field fluctuations are determined by the
neutrally stable Goldstone modes associated to translational invariance and by
the weakly damped soft modes. However these modes do not contribute to the far
field intensity fluctuations which are dominated by damped perturbations with
the same wave vectors than the pattern. We find strong correlations between the
intensity fluctuations of any arbitrary pair of wave vectors of the pattern.
Correlation between pairs forming 120 degrees is larger than between pairs
forming 180 degrees, contrary to what a naive interpretation of emission in
terms of twin photons would suggest.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure

Chapter 3 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) : Preliminary
Design Report. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific
instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration
in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 7,000 scientists
working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at
extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential,
the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its
luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design
value and the integrated luminosity (total collisions created) by a factor ten.
The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this
upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require about ten years to
implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), will
rely on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its
present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting
magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise
phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and
300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy
dissipation. The present document describes the technologies and components
that will be used to realise the project and is intended to serve as the basis
for the detailed engineering design of HL-LHC.Comment: 19 pages, Chapter 3 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC)

Noise induced transition from an absorbing phase to a regime of stochastic spatiotemporal intermittency
We introduce a stochastic partial differential equation capable of
reproducing the main features of spatiotemporal intermittency (STI).
Additionally the model displays a noise induced transition from laminarity to
the STI regime. We show by numerical simulations and a mean-field analysis that
for high noise intensities the system globally evolves to a uniform absorbing
phase, while for noise intensities below a critical value spatiotemporal
intermittence dominates. A quantitative computation of the loci of this
transition in the relevant parameter space is presented.Comment: 4 pages, 6 eps figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. See for
